Virginia City 100
Although I have wanted to ride the Virginia City 100 in historic Virginia City, Nevada for years -I didn’t know when the stars and moon would align. This ride is notorious for rough and rocky terrain with steep unforgiving climbs- the ultimate test in endurance riding. Additionally, this western mining town with wild mustangs roaming the streets just made the entire experience a bucket wish list.
Well- everything seemed to fall together for the 56th running of this monumental endurance ride. Gizmo has had a solid season and was ready to go and I had an amazing crew (my parents and Husband) who generously volunteered to come take care of me all weekend. Having a strong and knowledgeable support system is monumental to a successful 100.
So, we loaded up Gizmo and Lucy (moral support), the dogs, a trailer full of too much stuff, and off we went to Nevada.
We arrived to perfect weather for the weekend and spent the next day organizing, preparing, and investigating the trail.
One of the coolest things about this ride is the opportunity to start in the center of town and ride through town with 40 others
competitors, past the old cemetery, and into the rugged hills. I admit - I was very emotional - overflowing with gratitude- for simply being able to get to the starting line.
And suddenly - trail opened and off we went behind our police escort to ride one of the toughest 100-mile courses in the country.
