More Virginia City 100

The Virginia City 100 is comprised of 3 loops departing from base camp (53, 25, 22 miles in length) with multiple vet checks on trail and in camp. Each loop has its own trials and tribulations with steep climbs and technical terrain. There are absolutely remarkable panoramic views of Reno and surrounding mountain side. My favorite section of trail of the entire day was Baileys canyon in which you navigate canyon riverbed and climb 1500 feet. Through this section we averaged 3.6 mph and enjoyed every minute.

I was lucky to be able to ride with 2 endurance icons all day: Suzy Hayes and Becky Spencer. Our horses just clicked- they paced well together and pulsed down together. Gizmo and Porter even tought Ace how to have a little sass in his attitude. I really thought that Gizmo and I would be riding solo- so what an unexpected gift to have company. These ladies are tough, knowledgeable, and savvy competitors when navigating the course and the pace. If you have the opportunity - try to ride with individuals who push you and know more than yourself.

Becky Spencer was a walking GPS as she has completed this course twice before and kept us on track at every turn. Susie and I might still be wandering around the hills if it wasn’t for her!

At one juncture I asked Susie what was the hardest 100-mile race; Tevis or Virginia city? Her answer- every 100 is tough. This coming from an individual who just completed her 105th 100 mile race this past weekend. Every time she competes- she knows there is no such thing as an average 100. It will be tough- it will have its challenges and setbacks and yet she is still happily putting herself out there.

This weekend 14 individuals received their first Virginia City 100 completion- hopefully the first of many!!! Many other riders were brave enough to simply get to the starting line. Kudos and respect to all.

A special thank you to all the volunteers -especially an unknown smiling face at Mile 95 who made me a hot mocha coffee which gave me the energy to zoom to the finish line at 11:57pm.

Mom and dad- you are simply the best. I know 100s keep you up past bedtime, but I like to keep you on your toes. Thank you for still making my dreams come true.

David- love of my life- the next time we see Virginia City it will be side by side.
